The monastic complex includes the church of Santissimo Salvatore (Holy Savior), the seminary of the Noto Diocese and the former Benedictine monastery of the Holy Savior. It is the largest baroque style building in the whole Noto.
Next to the church, there is the new seminary of the Diocese of Noto, which was rebuilt in 1932 after a blaze ripped through the construction damaging the existing building, plus the church and the XVIIIcentury Benedictine monastery (which shares some premises with the seminary). The old seminary stands behind the cathedral, located at Cavour street. This old seminary, which still exists, did not have enough rooms so it was decided to use part of the Benedictine monastery to host seminarian students.
The great XVIII century Benedictine monastery is located in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, in front of the monastic complex of San Francesco all’Immacolata and Santa Chiara.
The monastery, as well as the church of the Holy Savior, were designed by Vincenzo Sinatra in the first half of the XVIII century, but the architect could not complete the construction. Other foremen completed the task after few decades. Then the monastery was given to the Benedictine monks of the old Noto. Since the second half of XIX century, following the decay of the monastic orders, part of the monastery has been using as the seminar of the Noto Diocese.
The most beautiful exterior part of the monastery overlooks Piazza Immacolata at the corner with Corso Vittorio Emanuele. This side of the monastery is remarkable for its graceful windows and balconies, embellished with elegant bas-reliefs and artistic wrought iron railings. From Piazza Immacolata visitors can also see a little arch with refined carvings following the bas-relief technique (unique in the world).
