The burial tour is focused on places where we can admire an ancient ritual used to preserve the bodies of the most important figures of society: the mummification method. This itinerary touches four places in the province of Ragusa (Scicli, Modica, Ispica and Comiso) where you will appreciate mummies: this is a unique tour that will lead visitors through mummified bodies which have come to us (almost) intact after centuries.
I11 Sub-Route 2 – Scicli and Modica
Route description: The route starts from Piazza Italia in Scicli, where we will move from Nazionale street to via Dolomiti street, within the quarry of Santa Maria la Nova. Here you get inside the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, the church-cemetery which represents one of the main attraction of this tour. After that, the route heads to Modica. The burial itinerary of Modica starts from Corso Umberto. The first stage of the visit will be the church of San Domenico and the adjoined underground crypt, located in the seventeenth century courtyard where we can find the remaining colanders and a hall with small cells where monk’s bodies are exposed. After the visit to the crypt, we will move from Corso Umberto to “stretto de Leva”, climb towards Carlo Papa street and Scala street until we will get to Liceo Convitto street. Here you will visit the church of Sant’Anna, where two recently studied mummified bodies are kept inside it.
