In the area of the Iblei Mountains the cult of the Virgin Mary is very common as she is venerated and prayed in all the ceremonies of the so called “Marian cycle” (Virgin Mary cycle). This route (and its sub-routes) will bring visitors to discover the link between the Virgin Mary and the cities around the Iblei Mountains, as well as the highly developed devotion to other holy women belonging to the Christian tradition.
I13 Sub-route 1 – Scicli
Route description: The route will bring visitors to discover numerous buildings related to the cult of the Virgin Mary and other holy Christian women, all deeply present among local worships traditions. The itinerary begins with the Church of Santa Maria la Nova; after that, we will head towards the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, whose we will only see the façade. The tour continues up to the Church of Madonna di Monserrato and its adjoined monastery. The next stage will be the Church and the Convent of Madonna del Carmine. From there, following the river stream of Santa Maria la Nova, we will get to the Church of Santa Teresa d’Avila. After that visit, the following stage will be the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista which we will reach by going through Francesco Mormino Penna street. The tour will resume after lunch break and the first stop will be the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) of Scicli. From the Mother Church, we will head towards the Church of San Giuseppe. The penultimate stop of the tour will be the Church of San Bartolomeo andwe will end our tour by visiting the seventeenth-century rocky church of Madonna di Piedigrotta.
