The route twists and turns through the main late Baroque towns of south-eastern Sicily such as Scicli, Modica, Ragusa, Ispica, Noto and Comiso, which were hit and severely damaged by the 1693 disastrous earthquake. However, the whole area rose again in the eighteenth century in an even more rich and sumptuous way. It is exactly this sumptuousness that we will show you in this path: something that makes special and unique this angle of Sicily, because it was skilfully and masterfully adopted on to a lively area rich of culture and traditions. Among the different churches you will visit, you will appreciate some of the features of the late Baroque: gargoyles and cherubs; rounded wrought iron railings; tower-shaped façades with complex geometries and incorporated bell; mixed up and polychrome marble; free columns.
